Okay, I will note that the fix for my login was very specific:

I had a file, /etc/profile.d/ZZZ-pulseaudio-k.sh, which was running
"pulseaudio -k" at system startup, which broke audio and seemed to
confuse the system long enough that my login screen would just freeze
for a minute or two.

So, if you've ever kludged pulseaudio at your system level and then
tried to upgrade ... look into that. :)

Agree that system upgrades for people who have been doing weird business
on their systems for a decade are, not shockingly, tricky.

Bug description:
  The error popping up during the upgrade process says Could not
  calculate the upgrade. An unresolvable problem occurred while
  calculating the upgrade. If none of this applies, then please report
  this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core'
  in a terminal. If you want to investigate this yourself the log files
  in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade.
  Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'.
