This is the result of the proposed command to run

ubuntu at rpi43:~$ piboot-try --reset-new
mktemp: Permission denied (os error 13) at path "/boot/firmware/new/state.ikQ"
/usr/sbin/piboot-try: 328: cannot create : Directory nonexistent
ubuntu at rpi43:~$
