Thanks, the charm customisations and misc config was most of what I was missing.

Tarmac charm:
lp:~jameinel/charms/precise/tarmac/add-install-dependencies

Environment and charm config are in the swift container 'tarmac' of
the juju-tools-upload user.

So, the crontab change is all I'm left not having or remembering how
to do. It was just running the tarmac command every 5 minutes or
something? I'll resetup the environment later today. (IS kindly had a
go at recovering the disk, but it was gone).
