I have a Pioneer DVD-120S, and had a similar problem, when logging into gnome
the message "Failed to initialized HAL" apeared randomly (not every time I
logged in, but very frequently). After clicking OK the whole desktop froze and I
was left with no choice but to restart GDM. After looking at dmesg I figured the
problem was with hdb (my pioneer dvdrom), a simple firmware update did the job,
even though I had the latest firmware, aparently reflashing the drive was enough
to fix the bug. I hope this helps someone...

PS: The strange thing is, this same drive worked fine under Warty and other
older distros.
