I think I found the solution:
as per my post elsewhere,

I added
Option "AGPMode" "4"
to the end of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and took it to sleep and it woke!
This is running the 2.6.10-5-powerpc kernel on a revision 1.1 early 2004 1.2 Ghz
ibook running the radeon 9200.
