I am using the ipw2100 as distributed with 2.6.10-5-686 and seeing the same
symptoms. Output snippet from wpa_supplicant -d:

ioctl[IPW_IOCTL_WPA_SUPPLICANT]: Operation not supported
ioctl[IPW_IOCTL_WPA_SUPPLICANT]: Operation not supported
