even if you are not playing any sound, the card is in use by ESD. ESD makes a
permanent
lock on the card. Still the kernel should not OOPS.

The difference is that ESD is not binded to the card at all. I would be surprised
if the card acttually works in that situation (with ESD application, alsa and oss
would work for other reasons)

The difference is that at boot time hotplug is doing a lot of work. Once you are
logged in hotplug has to handle only your card.
