Created an attachment (id=2598)
--> (http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/attachment.cgi?id=2598&action=view)
same as the above OOPS, with untainted kernel
Steps to reproduce:
1 - boot computer with USB audio hardware turned on (ESD is now the only
soundserver which works)
2 - (while no sounds are being played through the speakers) turn off USB audio
hardware when logged in (sometimes the crash happens here, freezing the
keyboard)
3 - reboot computer. computer will hang with the OOPS printed on screen,
requiring a hard reset.
Additional info: I cannot get the crash to occur if I turn on the USB audio
hardware *after* logging in the gnome, i.e. if ALSA is used for sound and not
ESD.
My question is - what does hotplug do differently when handling the soundcard
at boot, than while logged in to GNOME? If it handles the sound at boot only
ESD will work, and if it handles the sound after logging in to GNOME only ALSA
will work.
Also some clarification: contrary to what I said in the original report,
manually inserting snd-usb-audio (after logging in and before turning on the
sound) *doesn't* make any difference to those performance problems, so I think
you are right about the performance issue being an esound issue only.
Especially since I do not get a problem with arts in KDE.
