OK I have some good news and a patch:
I installed a standard Hoary on a spare partition via a warty upgrade and
installed the standard 2.6.10-686-smp kernel with source tree.
I confirmed that the nic functioned with the old warty 2.6.8 kernel with hoary
installed
That it failed with the 2.6.10 kernel.
I then ran the driver script from the 8.15 vendor sk98lin driver
The nic then worked perfectly (actually better as ifup now appears to work
whereas earlier it did not)
I generated a patch for this kernel and could generate some for the other
versions if needed
