They were all three Breezy, with different 2.6 kernels. One I can't access
anymore (not ours), the other two are 2.6.12-8.13-386 and 2.6.12-9.23-686.

dmesg output will be attached as soon as I've reproduced the bug. Work is
currently keeping me from trying.

Re what happens when you use it: I haven't created any file system, because I
was trying to salvage data. However, I did try to restore the partition table,
which seemed to go well, except for the reread because the device was reported
to be in use. Immediately printing the partition table again didn't work,
though: it found useless data again.

One time, a computer crashed while trying to store a partition table. This may
have been related to static electricity discharging through the keyboard, though.
