I have now done some cursory research into the problem.

There are two Realtek NIC drivers available for Linux.

Ubuntu is using the '8139too' driver, which supports only 8139 chipsets.

The 'rtl8139' driver(http://www.scyld.com/rtl8139.html) supports both
8129 and 8139 based cards. That page also has some interesting criticism
of the 8139too driver.

I note the presence of an '8139cp' driver on my system, but modprobing
it doesn't seem to help.
