Thanks for your reply, Ben. I'm fairly sure the filesystem is clean - I also have a ibook, and checked it there using Disk Utility. I had a look at fsck_hfs too (on Mac), but that doesn't seem to work with a journaled file system. The problem seems consistant... -- no hfs+ journal support https://launchpad.net/bugs/49052
