I have a similar problem with a Toshiba satellite 1410-303. At the end of the shutdown process the cursor blinks at the top-left of the screen.
I am able to switch to a different tty via alt+2/3/4.. but no other key works.
This happens also with 2.6.17.10, while it used to work on edgy until around 9/20.
