I've got some news for you...
lucid lynx is likely to have the same problem again!

I just installed the lucid kernel (32.3) on  my karmic machine (wanted the prop. modules) and got freezes again
so if i boot 
- lucid(32) -> freeze
- mainline 32 -> working
- lucid(32) -> freeze

.
.


how painful is that?!?! It has something to do with the modifications our beloved kernel team does with the vanilla kernel
