I'm only commenting on this post for those guys at the end of their pitiful ropes.
My Sony Vaio was effected by this after an upgrade to 2.6.31-14-generic and I tried every suggestion from this site and ubuntuforums, long story short, the ultimate fix was to unplug my machine, remove the battery and go play guitar for 30 minutes. So, just in case you aren't doing that because you think that can't possibly be the problem (like I did), do it anyway. You may save yourself some time.
