I'm test-driving the Karmic-to-Lucid upgrade on a June 2009 Macbook Pro.

My system just shut down hard because of a combination of the battery
running out and some power-management issues (bug 555585).

When it tried to come back up, the hardware clock was reset to the
distant past. Usually it's powered by a dedicated battery, in which
case it being reset doesn't make sense—and with a laptop less than a
year old I expect that battery to work well enough still. Note,
however, that this model has a fixed main battery so perhaps the
engineers decided to use that for the RTC as well.
