Since upgrading to 10.04 I'm having this problem as well.

influenza [~] > uname -a
Linux influenza 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Oddly, this problem only exhibits itself on one of my CIFS volumes.

My "home" volume is a 20GB export from another machine, which works
fine.

My "media" volume is a 3TB export from another machine, which upon
accessing causes a hardlock.

I'll run an apport-collect.
