I think the problem was I was using 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 and I was trying to install the 64-bit kernel.
Suggestion: a warning would be nice to warn about this.

So I reinstalled the 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04 (with the 2.6.32-21 kernel) and
I installed the 2.6.34-999 kernel
(this was difficult because the default 2.6.32-21 kernel crashed 6 times before I finally got it).

Then I applied all the suggested updates including the 2.6.32-22 kernel.
The 2.6.32-22 kernel crashes too, so now I boot 2.6.34-999, this seems to work.

The only disadvantage of 2.6.34-999 is that moving a window across the screen is very slow.
I am using ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run

Can this be fixed?

The conclusion: the default kernel of Ubuntu 10.04 is difficult to use on the ASUS N71JA-TY034X notebook.
