I'm not sure this is the same problem I had, but here is the solution
that worked for me:

prompt-$ sudo aptitude install athcool
prompt-$ sudo athcool off

To persist the change:

prompt-$ $EDITOR /etc/default/athcool
# change ATHCOOL_REVERSED to "yes"
