What is special in the ubuntu kernel regarding USB automounting?

For a number of reasons i need to build an own customized kernel package for 
an ubuntu warty system. As a debian maintainer i have no problem with this,
but for no apparent reason with my own kernel the automount of inserted
media like USB drives does not work, not even the icon is shown on the
desktop when i insert such a drive. 

With the original 2.6.8.1 kernel this works, but i can not see what the
reason might be, why my kernel does not work in this way. On what kernel
features does the detection and automount of USB mass storage devices
depend?
