Apparently /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent is missing (don't know if this file is
been used in Ubuntu - it's part of hotplugs detection mechanism) - also grepping
through /etc/ does not yield a file containing a reference to ipw - I also
reinstalled hotplug, no success.
