I have two Kubuntu Edgy installations with exactly the same symptoms;
"corrupted" memory, no user face in kdm_greet, chmodded /dev/null, bad
device 166, missing X-11 fonts. Neither will boot normally, but both can
run in 'recovery' mode, su to username and sudo startx. This has been
killing me, and it's good to see I'm not the only one. The user reported
last summer--was there any resolution?

Let me know what details of my setup will help, if any.
