No defrag necessary for ext2[3] and I assume Reiser file systems. Ergo,
no utility exists tmk. I know of no Linux-based utility for
defragmenting mounted FAT systems.
There IS a work around for defragmenting.
Fragmentation occurs the way things are written, deleted and new stuff added.
You can MOVE the files to another disk cleaning the VFAT disk out....and then move them back. This can be done in conjuntion with testing backups....of course you'd want to move them out in a redundant manner.
Secondly IF you have mixed windows/linux we have found it Very useful to just keep software on the windows computers ( we need certain windows graphics apps)
All our working files are kept on linux servers. Basically little gets written to the windows computers except in the temp and swap areas.
This means it takes months to get any significant fragmentation.
There is No way that I know of to run a check on VFat from linux.
There IS a third party program that can do this I believe that is popular in the OS/2 world.
DFSEE is a program that presents itself as a "swiss army knife" type disk maintenance program. I used it before migrating (from OS2 Servers to Linux)
I have read that it now supports Linux as well as Windows and OS/2 and eCS.
AFAIK it is x86 only.
It's also not OSS, but shareware model. There is a trial d/l available.
IIRC it can be obtained from mensys.nl and BMT micro in the US
