Advised by what? I've been running Debian (or now a derivative) for getting
close to five years now, and I've *never* had to fool with /etc/*modules* for
anything. I have no idea what mechanism Debian uses for this purpose,
because I've never had to tinker with it by hand.

If you're running into a situation that the automatic boot time configuration
bits aren't handling correctly (eg. Debian/Kubuntu aren't installing the
snd-seq-midi module out of the box, among a few trouble spots I've
encountered), and need to manually intervene to install a module by hand,
then do yourself a *big* favor.

Install the "modconf" utility, if it's not already installed, and use that to
install your module. Please ignore generic "edit /etc/modules.conf"
instructions you find out there on the web, and use modconf instead.

The tricky part is figuring out where the bloody hell the module you need is
hiding in the complicated tree. I have no thing particularly helpful to
offer there. Once you find it and load it, modconf takes care of whatever
config guts stuff Debian uses for this purpose, and you can keep your hands
clean.
