If you have the "desktop" version CD you can boot that, mount your 
hard drive and copy /home off to some other mounted device or drive 
that won't be bothered by the fresh install. When the install is 
done, copy the old, saved /home over on top of the new one. 

Or, you can just restore the old /home from your backup into the new 
installation.
