If you keep /home on a separate partition, then you can install without
touching that partition (ie /home for the new install is on the root
partition), and simply mount the old /home when the install is finished.
If you have multiple users, you'll probably want to restore
the /etc/passwd,/etc/shadow and /etc/group files from the original system
(so that everybody keeps the same uids).
