Doing free software for your university project is a great idea.

We have a number of things that will be needing ported to Qt4 Python
bindings.  Ubiquity needs moved to Qt4 and a port of the new GTK
screen keyboard onboard to Qt 4 would be great.  

In KDE 3 land porting gdebi or the dist-upgrade tool would be nice.
There's also some work to be done to the language-installer tool.

If you prefer C++ there's a number of improvements to Adept that could
be made.
