Kde/Gnome does not start at login

Did you update your kernel or xorg possibly ?  If you updated the kernel
then you need to reinstall any video drivers you had installed previously
against the new kernel so that they will work.  You can also run the
following command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg   to set up your xorg.conf file again.
I'd suggest making a backup of your current one first then doing that.
Usually the defaults are good enough to get you into X.
