I think you misunderstand: this isn't people refusing to help; people
likely genuinely feel mystified by this problem.

Thanks, I did think it a minor issue that would resolve itself with the proper repo in my sources.list.

However:

I don't recognise the versions in this. Notably, version
'0.70-3v1ubuntu0' is not listed in the Ubuntu package tracking system or
available as part of either Dapper or Edgy.

Also, section '3v1n0/kde' is absolutely and positively *not* a valid
section in either of Debian or Ubuntu. It is also not used in any of
the "standard" extensions to KUbuntu released by the official team.

Didn't know. Added the 3v1n0 repo most likely from reading the list in order to get a package that wasn.t available otherwise. Anyway from something *ubuntu related.

So, do you have any third party package repositories enable?

If so, and it seems likely that you do, you should contact the people
who have released the faulty package versions that are causing you
trouble.

I probably have one or two but not sure I'm getting your drift. I have the gtk thing 0.60-1.1ubuntu7 ver installed and 0.70-3v1ubuntu0 downloaded but wont install. The deps for 0.70-3v1ubuntu0 which I don't have and can't download or install is libstdc++6 =>4.1.0. Apt policy says that 0.70-3v1ubuntu0 is candidate and the policy for libstdc++6 says that 4.0.3-1ubuntu5 is both installed and candidate but i need 4.1.0-ubuntu0 and adept gives no details on it. Neither snaptic or aptitude. Policy shows that both programs list these repos:

        500 http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu dapper/main Packages
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com dapper/main Packages

Ok, if you know and don't mind, just who should I notify:
         http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu dapper/main Packages
          http://us.archive.ubuntu.com dapper/main Packages
http://3v1n0.tuxfamily.org/ dapper 3v1n0 which I discovered was added to get flashplayer 9 beta.

When you enable a third party repository you end up with the reliability
of your system being equal to the *lower* of the levels of reliability
of the sources you use.

Ok. but I chose to add flashplayer 9 and am happy with it.

If you /don't/ have any third party repositories enabled, try updating
your lists of available packages to see if you can flush out the
problem.

Updated may times and everytime I upgrade.

If, as seems highly likely, that doesn't resolve the problem you might
want to investigate the possibility that your system is corrupting
data -- use memcheck86+ for 48 hours to see if RAM is faulty, for
example, and ensure you are using an 80-wire cable and at least UDMA/33
speed for your hard disks.

This not likely. Have memcheck86+ installed as a result of another list suggestion. Nothing fails or is suspicious. My system doesn't crash, lockup and generally behaves well; just wont install the gtk thingie because the libstdc++6 => 4.1.0 is not available. If I could get that installed. problem solved.
I have the network cable provided by SBC Yahoo DSL 2Wire router/modem and don't know about UDMA/33(How to check).
Thanks for your help/input.

Regards,
        Daniel
