Dual Boot Intrepid KDE 4.2 runs like snail Hardy KDE 3.5.10 runs like rabit

Dealing with problems in Intrepid, the computer was reacting like I was out of 
memory.  A few minutes ago, I booted to Hardy and found that everything 
operates normally.  Xorg was using 88% of memory in Intrepid much of the 
time.  The only plasmoids I have running is a note taking plasmoid, digital 
clock and System Disk Info plasmoid.  With just kmail and the plasmoids 
running the system was less than sluggish.  Click and wait as much as 10 
seconds for the instruction to register.  Opening a package took 15 to 20 
seconds.  I remember virus behavior when running XP, years ago, has anyone 
ever gotten a virus with Kubuntu?  I sure would love some input.  TIA
