I googled for "8139too problem" and indeed,
acpi=off added to your /boot/grub/menu.lst is one of the more common
problem solvers.
You need to simply enter it on the "kernel" line of your
dfault ubuntu start entry.
I would suggest that you try it quickly and report back on what you get.
