Others had problems with the KDE interface to network-manager as well. I 
would suggest you try the Gnome version of the network applet. That one 
seems to work more reliable. It is the in the package network-manager-
gnome and the command is nm-applet. Another alternative would be wicd as 
a replacement for the network-manager.
