Hmm, this would make me fetch a lot of GNOME packages, which I’d like to
avoid. In addition, does a GNOME applet integrate well with Plasma?

Isn’t Network Manager a fundamental part of a normal Kubuntu installation?
What are the implications of removing or disabling Network Manager. I suppose
that it’s not possible to run wicd and Network Manager in parallel.
