microphone and skype

Since sending this request, I continued to work.  I received an instruction 
form the computer to remove libsdl1.2debian-alsa before continuing.  Since 
that I had to reboot to try to continue.  When I booted, I came to an 
interruption in the boot process that asked for my username and password.  
When I entered them, I was at a command prompt with no knowledge of what to do 
next.  That is where I am right now.

Should I attempt to remove pulseaudio right now using the CLI.  I am not 
exactly sure what to type in to do that.
