[Kubuntu 14.10] - Dead On Arrival?

How did you install it? Did you upgrade existing installations or with
fresh ISOs? In the latter case, did you check the md5sum?

3 Systems here, works on all three like a charm, be this a virtual
installation on brand new Windows 8.1 box with a GeForce GTX 980 card, dual
boot on the same PC (fresh installation), and upgrade from 14.04 since
Beta1 on a Lenovo X220 (core i7 + 8 GB Ram, Intel on board graphics).
