Alpine login problems

I have used Pine and later Alpine for over 20 years for areas with low 
bandwidth and I recently upgraded to 20.4 and I can't get Alpine to link 
with my provider, my old laptop with 16.4 still logs on with Alpine
  so 
can't find the problem, have copied all of the login details and reloaded 
several times but can't find what is keeping the login from happening. 
the error message says there is an inbox path problem but neither I nor my 
provider have any idea why the path works on 16.4 but not 20.4

has there been any changes or lack of support for 20.4 Alpine email 
client?
