When you select a text it is automatically copied into a selection buffer and it stays there even if you do things which hide the selection, like starting a program like nano. If you now click on the middle mouse button (wheel) you would paste the text from the selection buffer even though the text is no longer visually marked. You can also have a look at the gpm man page [1] in the section "OPERATION".
