We're not in need of `the first step in bringing Debian and Ubuntu
together'. Apparently, some of us are in need of a good understanding
of the political and social context in which we operate !
If any transfer of data from Malone to the Debian BTS is comtemplated
then:
1. this ought to be discussed at length with Debian
2. the things that Debian say they want should be provided
3. nothing should be done without explicit permission from the
appropriate people in Debian.
The right way to do this is to go to Debian and say `we think it might
be useful if ...' and let the requirements come out of the discussion.
This includes contemplating the possibility that Debian may not want
this at all.
One wrong way to do it is to go to Debian and say `we are going to do
XYZ to make our website feed data into your systems; hope that's ok
kthxbye'. Another wrong way would be to come to Debian with a fully
formed design (or worse, implementation), without first trying to talk
to them about what they want.
By `go to Debian', I mean that the designers of the relevant parts of
Launchpad should introduce themselves to the Debian BTS admins and ask
the Debian BTS admins where the discussion should take place;
personally, I think debian-devel is probably the right place but it is
the Debian project that must decide.
Ian.
