ubuntu live lockup at logon

When attempting to load ubuntu live (windows ver. recent acquisition), the
system locks up at logon. The process steps show:
[4294679.47800] uhci_hcd 0000:001d.2: host controller process error,
something bad happened!
further down the listing:
[4294683.91200] usb 2-1: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/start
[usb 2-1: can't read configurations, error -110
This makes me think that the Universal Host Controller is not supported by
ubuntu.
