Caroline is right. If its a guideline, the pressure to stick to the
rule is higher.
I dunno why but people take you less seriously in Foss if you use a
gender neutral nick.  I cant speak for others but probably women like
being anonymous online... maybe its less stressful.

I have used a gender neutral nick for years online and was never
questioned (at LC) as to why a list admin didnt reveal name, gender,
country, blah..blah.... but here, there is no shell.  Had it not been
for that rule (Fridge ed's must be Ubunteros), I would never have
applied for ubuntu membership.

So long as the work gets done why bother about their name. If someone
truly cares about name, fame and credits, they know how to make a
noise about themselves.
So why not leave the choice to the individuals ?
