Snap try broken?

Hey all. I'm on xenial classic:
$ snap --version
snap 2.17.1ubuntu1
snapd 2.17.1ubuntu1
series 16
ubuntu 16.04
I just tried to `snap try` my snap, and I get a whole lot of these in my
syslog:
cannot snap-exec: cannot read info for "nextcloud": stat
/var/lib/snapd/snaps/nextcloud_x1.snap: permission denied
/var/lib/snapd/snaps/nextcloud_x1.snap is a symlink to
$HOME/src/nextcloud-snap/prime . I do have an encrypted home, but I seem
to remember this working once upon a time. I know that hooks don't work
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/snappy/+bug/1637596), but is this a
different bug?
