What is your target architecture, ARM or Intel?
In case of ARM, it is highly likely that your external library has already
been compiled as ARMHF .deb package.
There is an example in this blog post, how to obtain and install missing
libraries

Look for the libpng installation.
deb2snap is another, more automated way of hunting down dependencies.

I have not used it as my desktop system is Intel-based but my target is
ARMHF.
