Who cares?
Slashdot trolls to the contrary, BSD is not dying, nor is it even ailing, except maybe BSDi, which, being closed source, is no surprise. It's pretty hard to kill any Free software (or Open Source) project except by convincing all of its developers they can do better doing something else. The only thing that can kill a Free software project is apathy, not of its users, but of its developers. The only users who actually matter are any project's developers, who are more or less transparently trying to subvert its users into some level of development.
There are probably boxes ticking along happily with Caldera Linux today. There are certainly boxes running today with Caldera noted in their software's copyright. Caldera is dead, and SCO's future is looking bleak. The code lives on.
But despite Fortune's fondest desire, BSD is unlikely to claim its deserved pre-eminance in Open Source. I don't think any GNU/Linux distribution ought to look for that , either.
It's a different world than Mr. Lyons would have us believe. It's no matter of domination and degradation, mere survival is success enough.
Someday Linux will be replaced. Some bright kid'll come up with a shiny new kernel. that does what Linux does and more. Or it might be HURD, even. I doubt it'll be as traumatic as the process we're living through as we stop obsessing on the Monopoly.
