My resume does include my Ubuntu involvement and I am very proud of it!.
However, I'd like to provide some "complementary" feedback.
I have been my own boss for the last 4 or 5 years and working ONLY in
trying to do business based on FLOSS and finding a business model that
can be applied to Chile, the country where I live (market with very
special characteristics). I have had great times, some with good amount
of adrenalin, and some only with good incomes. However, the last 2 years
have been very hard (in terms of having a kind of regular income bigger
than expenses), so hard that I have been forced to start looking for a
job.
Unfortunately, it seems to me that despite I mention the projects I have
worked for, the clients I have had, the volunteering I have done (yes, I
mention Ubuntu, of course), people hiring in Chile still prefer "regular
jobs experience" + amount of years on same company + regular "official
studies/diploma".
Those 3 "+" I don't have (nor a diploma on IT stuff) and it is becoming
very frustrating. The fact that all I have done (teaching, documenting,
volunteering, giving support, detecting problems and selling solutions,
innovating in the way we provide services, giving talks, self-studying,
etc.) is not considered "better"/"more qualified" than getting a
diploma/degree from regular universities or institutes (even when
competing with someone who has just a diploma but no experience at
all)...yes, in the end... it is very frustrating, especially when my
wife says: "oh, I am glad you received a lot of clapping from audience.
Now, please turn those claps into money we can use to pay bills and
food"
PS: if someone has had better experiences (still having them) and is not
Mark :D, please let's make a new subject and share those.
