Forgot to add: view the dvd using vlc. go Media>Open Directory navigate 
to that directory holding the dvd; get inside the directory and you will 
see a sub-dir called VIDEO-TS. RIGHT-CLICK on the video-ts JUST TO 
HIGHLIGHT - do NOT open it or anything; once it is highlighted put the 
cursor left-click on the open space (anywhere below the highlighted 
video_ts - this will leave video_ts highlighted; then click on Open 
(bottom right) and the dvd will play.

In the past one could use kaffeine to play such a dvd but the latest 
versions won't do it hence the rather fiddly way of doing things using vlc.
