OK, again...

$ sudo dpkg -i mkisofs_2.01.01a50-0ubuntu1~ppa1~hardy_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 248447 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace mkisofs 10:2.01.01a50-0ubuntu1~ppa1~hardy (using mkisofs_2.01.01a50-0ubuntu1~ppa1~hardy_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mkisofs ...
Replaced by files in installed package genisoimage ...
Setting up mkisofs (10:2.01.01a50-0ubuntu1~ppa1~hardy) ...

So it seems that it isn't being installed because the genisoimage
package already "provides" it. But you can't remove genisoimage without
also removing ubuntu-desktop, so you'd have to make a dummy package to
work around this.

But it's all beside the point, because unless the license issue is
settled Ubuntu won't go back to using cdrtools and thus genisoimage
should be properly fixed. But since I haven't found a single version of
it that does work it's hard to say when things broke...
