I'm having this same error in Precise (12.04), using kernel Linux
citronelle 3.2.0-24-generic #39 (64 bits) in a Sony Vaio VPCSB35FB. DVD
drive is a "MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ8A2AS" (according to dmesg).
