The first thing I would do is to run GPARTED from the live distro cd and
partition and format the drive completely (if you can). This is to
ensure that the disk is good. Another thing to do is get from the HD
manufacturer a diagnostic floppy image and run it to check the drive. A
13G drive is fairly old in the computer realm, and it may be faulty. You
may need to replace it.
