THE 7.04 EXPERIENCE

As previously stated, I decided to do a complete new install of Feisty
using the final distribution CD.

The installation went smoothly with no problems. I had previously
backed up all my Firefox and Thunderbird files, so was able to quickly
restore all my bookmarks, emails and address books.

But I did have some strange experiences. A new 'disk' appeared on my
desktop. On opening it, it appeared to be a second copy of the File
System, but it was not always in sync with the Places/Computer/File
System. For example, I created an new directory in Terminal for my
removable drive. This showed up in the latter, but did not show in the
Desktop 'disk' version of the File System. Does anyone know why this
'disk' has been added. It wasn't present in my fully updated Feisty Beta.

I also had problems with my removable ntfs drive being recognized for
read/write. I eventually got this recognized by 'force'. The system
complained that this drive was 'dirty'. So I installed it on my XP
computer and did a Chkdsk. No problems there. When I reinstalled it
under Feisty, it was still considered 'dirty'. I also did a ntfsfix to
now avail. Anyone know why this might be and how it could be fixed
other than by 'force'?

Managed to get all the restricted stuff going, but needed more than just
the gstreamer. May be the prompts could have led straight to the
appropriate support and explanation file, where I eventually ended up to
ensure I had installed all the required goodies.

I presume the Update Manager servers are working overtime at the
moment. Things were really slow today! :-) :-) :-)

The good news was that all my audio problems with Ekiga and GizmoProject
were solved with the new clean installation. Boy, the audio quality
with GizmoProject is really excellent. No echoes -- just a first class
effort. I intend to stay with Gizmo from now on. Skype cannot even be
loaded. This is not a big problem for me as the audio quality was awful
and inconsistent.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this noble effort. So we're off
to the races with the Feisty Faun! Best to all, Maurice
