Alfred:

I presume you launched  SANE to activate your scanner. I got a Canon 
MP160 Scanner/printer and it came up no problem. Another user I spoke 
with also had sucess with Canon under other distros so it would not be a 
bad choice. BTW the printer works well too !  An old HP flatbed work as 
well under 6.10 and later. I agree with the Windows opinion you have.
